More than 1,000 gifts given this past December
A record number of children were touched through the generosity of Arvada residents and City of Arvada employees participating in the 5th annual Lighting up the Holidays program.
On December 23rd, Arvada City Manager Craig Kocian, Police Chief Don Wick, police officers and other city staff delivered holiday gifts to children as part of the giving program. The gifts ranged from toys and games and clothes and bikes.
Each family was also given a pass to US on Wheels in addition to a $20 gift card to Safeway.
City of Arvada staff and volunteers wrapped the gifts in the week leading up to delivery day.
“We saw a 13% increase in the number of kids nominated for the Lighting up the Holidays program this year, which is indicative of the struggles families are facing in today’s economic climate,” said Police Chief Don Wick. “To be able to help Arvada families by bringing a little extra joy into their homes during the holiday season meant a great deal to citizens and staff who donated their time and money as part of this important program.”
Soccer Stars Wrap Up the Season by Wrapping Gifts
What do soccer players do when their fields are covered with ice and snow? They wrap Christmas presents. Hundreds of Christmas presents.
More than a dozen members of the Colorado Edge competitive soccer team gave back to the community by wrapping Christmas gifts for children receiving presents through the City of Arvada’s Lighting up the Holidays program.
This is the second year the athletes took part in this community event.
