School Resource Officer Don Bass-Arvada K-8

Officer Don Bass has worked for the Arvada Police Department since 1988.  In January of 2005, Officer Bass moved into his current assignment as the School Resource Officer for Arvada Middle School, now Arvada K-8.

While most of his experience has been with patrol, School Resource Officer (SRO) Bass worked as a D.A.R.E. officer for three years where he spent a great amount of time in the classroom.

SRO Bass is a graduate of Metropolitan State College of Denver, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminology.

Police Pals Program

In addition to his duties at Arvada K-8, SRO Bass runs an after-school program, “Police Pals.”  This grant-funded program is offered at two elementary schools.  In Police Pals, children have the opportunity to experience fingerprinting, report writing, laser speed enforcement and are given the opportunity to visit with Animal Management officers and the motorcycle traffic unit.

Other Activities with Youth

SRO Bass is also an instructor for the Arvada Police Department’s annual “Teen Citizen’s Police Academy”.  This week-long summer academy provides high school students with an interactive look at police work.  Participants learn about several topics, including SWAT, building searches, crime scene investigation and working with K9’s.  Participants also receive hands-on opportunities to test their driving ability in a marked patrol car and to process a mock crime scene.

Previous programs offered by SRO Bass include “Life Savers”,  a program geared towards middle school-aged youth that provided a hands-on glimpse of police work and “Kops and Kids”, which provided bikes to children of families who otherwise couldn’t afford one.
