Programs Offered by the Community Safety Unit
Adult Crossing Guard (Adults only) - Organized by school the P.T.A. and parent groups, the program consists of adult volunteers who assist in safely crossing children through busy intersections. The Safety Coordinator will help set up the program and train the crossing guards. The Arvada Police Department will provide a safety vest and stop sign.
Pedestrian Safety (K through 3rd grade) - Students watch a video tape in which Pinocchio or McGruff demonstrate how to be a skilled pedestrian. Following the video, the Safety Coordinator leads a discussion on how to use the safety tips every day.
Bicycle Safety (1st through 6th grades) – The Bicycle Safety program is offered as a classroom only presentation or in conjunction with the Bicycle Road-eo. In the classroom setting, students view a variety of videos that are appropriate to the age group. The safety tips demonstrated in the video are then reinforced by an interactive bicycle safety discussion led by the Safety Coordinator. If the bicycle safety is integrated with the Bicycle Road-eo, the classroom presentation ideally should be completed first.
Bicycle Road-eo (1st through 6th grades) – The Bicycle Road-eo is an outdoor activity. Students bring their bicycles to school for the event which is generally held in a safe location of the school parking lot. Each bicycle is given a brief safety inspection and the students then ride their bikes through a series of patterns designated by pavement markings and traffic cones. The program provides students an opportunity to practice the safety tips learned in the classroom presentation and to see how well they know their bicycles and their own riding abilities. Helmets are required for each participant and may not be shared.
Operation Lifesaver (K through 8th grades) – Operation Lifesaver is a very valuable addition to our safety agenda and is supported by the railroad companies of Colorado. The program teaches students about railroad grade crossing hazards and how to safely avoid those dangers.
Stranger Awareness (K through 3rd grades) – Strangers come in all sizes, shapes, and ages. With the aid of age appropriate video, students are taught to be alert and how to recognizing a ‘dangerous stranger”. The Safety Coordinator will lead a discussion on how to safety get away from individuals who make young people uncomfortable and to find a safe location to find help.
9-1-1 (K through 3rd grades) – What is 9-1-1? When can I use 9-1-1? How do I use 9-1-1? These questions and many more are answered for students in this safety class. Students watch a “puppet” video, which has been produced by firefighters specifically for instructing young students to react in an emergency. The Safety Coordinator will lead a series of practice emergency scenarios so the students have a better understanding of how to handle an emergency situation at home or school.
The McGruff House (all grades and adults) – The McGruff House program is designed to teach homeowners how to be available for students during the times when they are traveling to and from school. The Safety Coordinator will instruct adults to understand how to provide young students with a safe place to go, and young students how to recognize where to go in the event they become lost, injured or frightened.
Vandalism (3rd through 6th grades) – Vandalism destroys! Vandalism ruins our self-esteem, our communities, and our property. It’s not cool…and it’s not OK. These are a sample of the messages from the video, “McGruff on Vandalism”. The Safety Coordinator will reinforce these messages by discussing with students the consequences of this behavior and how to be a responsible member of their community.
Crime Prevention (3rd through 6th grades) – Crime Prevention is everyone’s responsibility…regardless of age. McGruff says, “Help me take a bite out of crime.” The ideas expressed in a McGruff video make it clear that everyone can be a crime fighter or …“a crime biter”. The interactive discussion between students and the Safety Coordinator following the video helps bring students to the realization they can help prevent crime and solve crimes, by being observant and tell an adult when they see something wrong.
Latchkey Children / Self-Care Children (3rd through 4th grades) –This program is all about students who must be at home alone, before or after school hours, or both. The topics discussed with the Safety Coordinator include activities that Mom and Dad approve of, to the behaviors we all know are not OK. The Safety Coordinator and students discuss how to handle boredom, loneliness, anger and peer pressures; and what they can do to overcome these feelings in a positive and mature way.
Reading Literacy Program (K through 3rd grades) – In this program, the Safety Coordinator will promote reading literacy by reserving a portion of each month to read from select library of books that are appropriate to the student age group. After each reading, time is spent talking about the importance of reading and how it will affect the student’s future. Guest readers, such as the Chief of Police, Police Officers and other members of City Government are invited from time to time.
Halloween Safety (K through 3rd grades) – Halloween should be a fun time for our children. With the aid of a McGruff video, the students will learn many ways to enjoy trick or treating…the safe way. Alternatives to wearing a mask, how to make costumes fun and safe are discussed as well as other safety issues relevant to the holiday.
