School Resource Officer Tom Vander Veen - Arvada West High School

Officer Tom Vander Veen has been employed as a police officer for 25 years. He is currently assigned as the School Resource Officer for Arvada West High School. He has worked in several special assignments, to include: DUI Officer, Motorcycle Officer, Accident Reconstruction Expert in the traffic unit, as well as working in patrol. He brings a great amount of experience to the high school. He writes:

"Being an SRO has been the most rewarding assignment thus far. Everyday is a new challenge and being around the students and faculty is great! I feel my main function at the school is to maintain a safe environment and, secondly, to be a resource for the students and faculty. I feel that having a police officer in the school helps to create a relationship and rapport between the students and the police. The students are more cooperative in investigations when they know the police officer."

Officer Vander Veen continues to foster relationships by attending the students' sporting events and functions, building bonds with the students and community. During his time at Arvada West High School, Officer Vander Veen has accomplished: "Alive at 25," Student "Crime Stoppers," and a new program this Fall 2006 - Parent/Student Resource Night.
