Arvada Police Detective Kelli Scherer has worked with kids throughout much of her career with the Arvada Police Department. She was a school resource officer at North Arvada Middle School and is currently a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit.

Det. Scherer recently became the police department's coordinator of fund raising events for the Special Olympics of Colorado organization.

"Before Officer Harlan Carey retired from the APD, he was extremely active in coordinating our support of the Special Olympics. I look forward to building upon Harlan's legacy in helping raise money and awareness for this tremendous organization."

Thursday, June 1 marks the Arvada Police Department's leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run. The Torch Run is an event where law enforcement personnel pay tribute to athletes who will be competing in the Special Olympics Summer games in Colorado.

Arvada officers will receive the torch at 88th and Wadsworth Blvd. and run south to hand off the torch to Wheat Ridge police officers at I-70 and Wadsworth Blvd.

Many Arvada officers will continue the Torch Run through Lakewood on to Colfax Avenue and then to the state Capitol.

The event will culminate at Coors Field where police officers from law enforcement agencies throughout the state will join athletes with the Special Olympics for a special event.

Scherer says that Colorado law enforcement officers have raised more than $17,000 for the Special Olympics of Colorado this year alone.

Scherer has assisted in Tip-A-Cop events in Arvada to raise money and awareness for the Special Olympics organization.
