Police Officers Carry Torch to Celebrate Special Olympics
Arvada police officers will be wearing a different kind of uniform on May 31. A handful of officers will wear t-shirts commemorating the Special Olympics Torch Run as they carry the torch to celebrate the start of the summer games for Special Olympics Colorado.
Law Enforcement began participating in this run 25 years ago as a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Officers from 50 states and 30 countries participate in this event to raise more than $120 million worldwide.
Proceeds help provide year-round training and competition activities for special athletes of all ages. These opportunities help developmentally disabled children and adults experience the pride, physical fitness, joy, skills and friendship.
Officers from the Arvada Police Department will meet with officers from the Westminster Police Department at 88th and Wadsworth and continue south to I-70 and Wadsworth, where they will hand the torch off to Wheat Ridge officers.
After meeting with Wheat Ridge, Arvada police will continue their run until they reach the State Capitol, where a ceremony will be held for Special Olympic athletes. From the Capitol, the police, athletes, and an ex-marine who will call a cadence for the runners, will all continue to Coors Stadium for lunch.
