Did you know that dozens of Arvada police officers participate in the Torch Run supporting Colorado Special Olympics? Or that police dispatchers in the Department’s Communications Center mentor middle school students? The fact is, members of the Arvada Police Department donate hundreds of volunteer hours each year to give back to their community.

“Police officers have always had a special tie to the athletes participating in the Colorado Special Olympics. We not only show that support through our participation in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, but through assisting at the games as well,” said Officer Harlan Carey who coordinates the Department’s role with the Special Olympics Colorado organization.

In addition to the Torch Run, officers donate time to raise funds for the Special Olympics in other ways, such as dressing in a ‘Red Man ’ padded suit while golfers try to hit the officer at a local golf course.“ The golf fund-raiser is a lot of fun,” said Officer Carey. “People take great delight in trying to hit the officer in the Red Man suit on the driving range, and for a buck-a-ball, it’s cheap entertainment!”

Two Arvada police dispatchers were recently recognized at a metro area 911 banquet for their dedication to helping youth through a mentoring program. Dispatchers Michelle Hoffman and Tom Masciatro donate their personal time to give back to their community through helping children who have fallen behind in their studies. Not only do they help students with schoolwork, but also talk with the kids about their lives and act as role models.

“When you see an officer on the street you may only see him as a person there to write tickets, but in reality our Department is comprised of dozens of people who are compelled to give back to the community and who do so on a regular basis,” said Chief Ron Sloan.
