Residents living in the 7900 block of Otis Cr. Awoke to sounds of gunfire just after midnight on Sunday, January 16, 2005.

It’s believed a man living on the block, Robert Martin, DOB: 04/24/59, fired a handgun from his front porch.

After being called by residents in the area, Arvada police officers responded to the scene in an attempt to contact Martin.

When officers could not reach Martin (he had retreated inside the house), and then later heard another gunshot from inside the home, the Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team was called to the scene.

After mobilizing, SWAT officers were able to contact Martin via specialized communications equipment, and Martin surrendered without incident just after 4:30 a.m..

He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and booked on charges of illegal discharge of a firearm (class six felony) and prohibited use of a weapon (misdemeanor).  The case will be filed with the Jefferson County DA’s Office the week of January 17.

Police are investigating why Martin was firing the weapon.
