Medical Emergency May Have Caused Accident
A 61-year-old Golden woman may have suffered a medical emergency which led her to drive her car – with a female passenger inside – off the road in the 8300 block of W. 74th Avenue (roughly 74th and Carr St.) and into a canal filled with water at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 30.
When Arvada police officers arrived on-scene just minutes after the accident, they discovered a 2001 Chevrolet Impala nearly filled to the roof with water, which had floated roughly 300 yards to the east from where the car entered the canal
The canal was filled with more than four feet of water.
Arvada Fire Department personnel removed both women from the car. The driver was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge while the passenger was taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital Central in Denver.
The driver, whose name is not being released, was pronounced dead at Lutheran a short time later.
It’s unknown at this time the exact circumstances surrounding the medical emergency that ultimately led to the accident. The Jefferson County coroner will continue to investigate the cause of death of the driver, as well as notify next of kin.
The passenger in the accident was treated and released from the hospital.
