Public Invited to Attend Meeting About Police Needs

Did you know that Arvada detectives investigated nearly 100 child sexual assault cases last year?

A group of more than 20 community members have come together to learn about crime statistics such as sexual assault, changing crime trends, staffing issues, the police budget and other areas pertaining to the Arvada Police Department.

Their mission: to review public safety needs for the community in an effort to make a recommendation to Arvada’s City Council regarding the future direction of the Arvada Police Department with regard to addressing staffing and other budgetary issues.

The Blue Ribbon Panel conducted its first meeting in mid April to assess information about the Arvada Police Department in an independent and objective manner.

“We felt that it was imperative that the City convene the panel to impartially assess the department’s charge in meeting the public safety needs of Arvada residents,” said Chief Ron Sloan of the Arvada Police Department.

Sloan adds that members of the Blue Ribbon panel, some of which were appointed by City Council, will keep an open mind as well as provide an open forum for public dialogue as Arvada residents are welcome to attend the meetings.

The Blue Ribbon Panel is comprised of community members representing a variety of areas of including: business, finance, education, non-profit organizations, homeowners and others.

The panel will report its finding to Arvada’s City Council by late June 2005.

The panel will host a meeting on Tuesday, May 17, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Conference Room, which is located on the third floor of Arvada’s City Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
