Vandals Strike at Arvada Cemetery

Approximately 100 headstones were damaged by vandals at the Arvada Cemetery, 5581 Independence Street, sometime between the late hours of July 18th and the early morning hours of July 19th (2006).

Based on the police investigation, it appears that vandals damaged the headstones by turning the pieces over. Some headstones simply fell to the ground without damage; while others were broken.

Empty bottles of alcohol were found in the area where the vandalism took place.

The Arvada Cemetery has been in existence since 1863. One of the damaged headstones belonged to a member of the Wadsworth family, a prominent family in Arvada’s history.

Damage from the incident was in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Suspects have not been identified in this case. Anyone with information should contact the Arvada Police Department at 720-898-6900.

A reward of nearly $500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect(s) responsible for this crime.
