Arrest Made in Arvada Backflow Device Theft

Blizzard-like conditions and an alert citizen led to the arrest of a Denver man allegedly trying to steal an irrigation backflow device from an Arvada park on Monday, February 7, 2011.

Police were called to Homestead Park in the 6300 block of Depew Ct. at 11:00 p.m. on a call of a pipe being forcibly removed from the ground. In an attempt to flee the scene, the driver of the SUV had a difficult time leaving the area due to the adverse weather conditions.

Officers located the suspect's two-toned SUV within a few minutes and stopped the driver in the area of West 66th Avenue and Lamar Street.

The suspect/driver is William Calderon, age 30, of Denver. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police recovered a metal backflow device in the suspect's vehicle.

Detectives are investigating to determine if this suspect is connected to a series of backflow device thefts reported in Arvada since November of last year.

Police are also investigating to see if anyone else was with the suspect at the time of the alleged theft.

Calderon was arrested and taken to the Jefferson County Jail. He is facing theft charges.
