Identity Theft - Vishing

Most people have already familiarized themselves with phishing.  Identify thieves may use fake web sites or realistic-looking fake emails in order to obtain your private information in order to steal your identify.

Have you ever heard of vishing?

VoIP is the short name for Voice over Internet Protocol.  It is where the internet is used to make telephone calls and allows identity thieves to make anonymous calls to your phone.  They may pretend to be credit card agencies, asking you to confirm your private financial information.  Once they have your information, they then use it to fraudulently run up charges on your account.

Here are some tips to protect yourself:

VoIP can allow a talented thief to fake some telephone numbers.

Even if the number looks legitimate or appears to be from your same area code, be wary of ANY call that asks for your private information.  Attempts over the telephone to ask you to verify, update, or confirm your financial data should be treated with extreme caution.

If an email arrives, asking you to verify or input sensitive financial information, do not do it

If a toll-free (or any number) is provided on the email, do not use it.

If someone calls you unexpectedly, asking for same information, do not give the information.

Instead, use a phone number on the back of your credit card to verify if someone from your credit card company is trying to legitimately contact you.

Never give the three (or four) digit security code on the back of your credit card and you did not initiate the call, do NOT provide this information.  Again, call the credit card company yourself with the number for customer service on the back of your credit card.

Internet thieves using VoIP to try to steal your identity may not have your name.  Be suspicious of any callers who fails to address you by your first or last name.

And last, notify your credit card company or financial institution if someone tries to "phish" or "vish" from you.  They are committed to reducing fraud and monetary losses through internet fraud and need your help in tracking identify thieves down.
