Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan: Arvada's Second Sister City

On the other side of the world is Arvada's second sister city, Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, established in October 2002. Kyzylorda, which means "Red Fort", is in the steppe region of Kazakhstan, the ninth largest country in the world in terms of land mass. The city is 186 years old.

Kyzylorda is an educational center of central Asia with a state university and over a dozen private colleges in the city. Located along the Syr Darya River, it is a fertile rice growing area. The climate of Kyzylorda has undergone a change with the winders being colder and the summers being hotter. Much of this may be attributed to the shrinking of the Aral Sea. Kazakhstan has a long history of art, jewelry making, and other cultural activities.
