Wadsworth Bypass Project Update for June 2008

The Colorado Department of Transportation has scheduled work to switch northbound traffic from the detour to the new roadway alignment under the two new bridges for the BNSF RR and Grandview Ave. The Colorado Department of Transportation has scheduled work to switch northbound traffic from the detour to the new roadway alignment under the two new bridges for the BNSF RR and Grandview Ave. The major portion of the work is scheduled for the last weekend in June. This is for the northbound lanes only; the relocation of the southbound lanes is scheduled for the fall of 2008.

The process to complete this is somewhat complicated because the existing detour lanes overlap the area of the new northbound lanes which have a significant grade change to match the new configuration. The process will be handled in four phases as follows:

Phase I  In Process-Close northbound right turn lane to drop grade and construct walks.

Phase II  Start Monday, June 16, 2008-Shift the three northbound through lanes to the west and remove one northbound left turn lane. During this phase additional work will be completed in the closed area to match the new grade.

Phase III  Start Thursday, June 26, 2008-This phase will start Thursday night and will reduce Wadsworth to two northbound through lanes and one northbound left turn lane. This will close more of the area to allow work on the grade change.

Phase IV  Start Friday, June 27, 2008-This is the final phase of the change over and the most restricting. Both northbound and southbound through movements will be reduced to two lanes each and moved to the area of the existing detour that is currently used for southbound traffic. Northbound left turns will be prohibited until Monday morning, June 30, 2008. This phase will allow for the full construction of the northbound lanes to a final section and open to traffic by rush hour Monday morning.  The new northbound lanes consist of three through lanes and two left turn lanes.

During this process CDOT staff will be evaluating the signal timing at the Ralston Rd. signal to insure adequate time is provided for all movements. CDOT will also align signal heads as required during the lane switch.

As is standard procedure, CDOT will notify all businesses in the immediate area and Olde Town. Message boards will be deployed on both the northbound and southbound sides of Wadsworth Blvd. to help guide motorists.

The Traffic Division will maintain contact with CDOT throughout this process and this information will be posted on the City’s website.
