ARVADA, CO – World-renowned artist Xu Bing will present his gallery talk "Word Play: The Art of Xu Bing" at the Arvada Center on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Mr. Xu will introduce his body of work and discuss his ongoing interest in creating installations that occupy a space between written language and visual art.
Mr. Xu was born in Chongqing, China in 1955 and grew up in Beijing. In 1977 he enrolled in the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing where he studied printmaking. He received a master’s of fine arts degree from the Central Academy in 1987. In 1990 he moved to the United States; he currently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y. His work has been featured around the world with exhibitions in New York, London, Sydney, Korea, Australia and South Africa. His work recently appeared at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. In July 1999 Mr. Xu won the MacArthur Fellows Program Award from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in recognition of his originality and creativity in printmaking and calligraphy.
"Word Play: The Art of Xu Bing" is held in conjunction with the Arvada Center’s current gallery exhibition Avant Garde Calligraphy which features work by Mr. Xu along with other artists from China and Japan who use calligraphy to create their exciting and thoughtful contemporary works.
