Arvada PD Responds to Hostage Situation

On Monday, February 3, 2013, at about 5:30 PM, Arvada Police Department was dispatched to the 6100 block of Gray Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. 

When officers arrived on scene, they learned the male suspect had fled the disturbance and entered an unrelated home.  The suspect took a 13 year old juvenile male hostage. 

The Jefferson County Regional SWAT arrived and began negotiating with the suspect.  The negotiations lasted 18 hours.  Westminster SWAT team, Lakewood/Wheat Ridge Combined SWAT, Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, Arvada Fire Protection District, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Corrections assisted with the incident.  Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. 

The incident ended on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at about 11:00 AM when the SWAT team rescued the hostage.  The suspect was shot and killed. The hostage was physically unharmed.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team was called out to investigate the incident. 

Evacuated residents may respond back to their homes. 

The suspect’s identification is not being released at this time.
